ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | KATHRIN | “RED BUTTERFLIES”
I am loving Kathrin’s single, “Red Butterflies!”
In her past EP of “One, Two, Three Times a Fool” in 2023, Kathrin gave us a personna of toughness and independence with a mixture of jazz instruments to up the beat. A mantra, if you will, that she was no longer going to be a fool to love. Do we truly give up love forever, though? Kathrin has now done and blessed us with what everyone wants from a true artist, and that is to be real, raw, and open.
In the first and second chorus, we see her body language along with her tone of voice of asking “how?” being quite familiar to us who have experienced gut wrenching pain that we never saw coming or expected. With her clutching hands and then a gripping fist, to add the cherry on top of the soft, broken, high-pitched raspy voice ; her whole being and body is feeling the pain. She asks to join her red butterflies to take her up to the sky as if she would rather fly away to feel peace instead of betrayal. It does not help that she feels betrayal from herself and is letting her pride down in admitting other people were right about her past lover.
The music video alone, along with the instruments and distinguished sounds of the snare and cymbal, like a clock and simultaneously a heart beat, is a great representation of the lyrics. The intertwining of a black and white video along with her asking “how could you hurt me?” in the past tense, is remarkable. The scene goes together flawlessly to give off the “things are now in the past, but I still have questions” vibe we all feel with her and if you are like me, want to know the answer like she does! Black and white can signify the past, just like old pictures we have from decades ago. In the video, the only colorful object is in fact, the red butterfly. Red butterflies can be great examples of the red heart, happiness, but can also signify that of a red cardinal representing life and death cycles, along with life’s journeys. The red butterfly on the empty road being safely nestled in between the pine tree’s was another great representation of life’s journey. What is next for Kathrin after this defying heartbreak?
Kathrin, thank you for being real and raw about the number one thing people do not want to talk about the most: pain. This release has given me a new respect and adoration for you. Someone so young is absolutely capable and able to feel these feelings despite naysayers saying otherwise. It was felt and the cry was deeply heard in your voice. I cannot wait for more!
