ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | ADELINE V. LOPEZ | “DRINK UP”

“drink up” the new single by Adeline Lopez endeavors to reach at your heart strings and invites you to get lost in introspection by her angelic voice, powerful lines and accompanied guitar strings.

The song is presented in a slow, somber and reflective note. This may be attributed to the message behind the lyrics as it has to do with the consumption of feeling-inhibiting indulgences. The vocals are almost transfixed in a dreamlike state as if she was already under the influence. The music flows in such a way that it takes you through a myriad of emotions that she’s feeling some highs, and bountiful lows.

Lopez’s song tells a tale about a girl who is drawn to but also taken aback by the older bartender. The story unfolds by her realizing that she is losing her true self to the idealization of being somebody else and their constant need for validation. Her youthful naivety gets subdued by the alcohol and the demeaning presence of a presumed enabler, the bartender. Her wanton need to please this person is showcased by the cover art to this single. The power dynamic is prevalent with her eyes looking up to him as someone of authority or of admiration as he is feeding her more feeling inhibitors to keep her docile and “young” as he likes it.

The song concludes with her seemingly succumbing to him, reflecting her feelings of inadequacy. She isn’t allowed to feel or think for herself; instead, she acts and feels according to the expectations of those she is trying to please.

This song is an amazing listen if you’re trying to lose yourself in self-reflection or are in a bout of indifference and looking to analyze something for meaning. Lopez finds an amazing medium in which she can tell a story without it feeling too convoluted to find the message she has hidden within.
